Apple Mighty Mouse Spills Its Guts

Many criticized the Macintosh computing platform for having a single button mouse years after the PC Wintel world went to multi button mice. On August 2, 2005 Apple introduced a four button mouse effectively eliminating this long standing criticism of the platform. Some may say Apple is still not shipping a multi-button mouse with every new computer and doesn't offer a multi button trackpad on it laptops and therefore is still behind the times. But, there is not doubt that Apple is making big moves this year with the announcement of a switch to Intel processors from the IBM PowerPC and now with the introduction of an Apple branded multi-button mouse. What else might Apple have up it sleeve?

In typical Apple fashion their multi-button mouse is departure from the norm. One that I'm sure many people at Apple believe will set a new interface standard and spawn many copy-cat products. The journey is still out on these topics, but, read on for my opinions on this topic. One should note that Apple is not the first to market a mouse with a capacitive touch sense interface. Logitech beat Apple to that punch.

Being a long time Mac user and knowing just a little about about capacitive touch sense Apple's announcement prompted me to place an order for the Mighty Mouse with the intention of taking the little bugger apart to see what made it tick. Since that was my main motivation I'll cover the innards of the Might Mouse first and offer my impressions of the Mighty Mouse's perforce at the end of this article.

WARNING: I started taking apart my Mighty Mouse knowing that it may never work again. Do not take apart yours unless you are willing to accept that yours may never work again.
