Apple Mighty Mouse Spills Its Guts
Mighty Mouse User Experience (continued)
In my limited use of the Might Mouse I've had the following observations. The right and left buttons work pretty well, but, the right button seems to have problems sometimes. I'm not sure why but it seems that the right click doesn't always register. I've noticed this while writing this article. Often when I try to right click on a word it registers as a left click and does not bring up the suggested spelling menu. I'm tempted to write this off to something I've messed up while taking apart the mouse, but, in the usage notes I wrote prior to taking the mouse apart I mentioned that the right button did not always seem to work. I would be very interested in hearing if other users are experiencing this problem.
The scroll button takes a little getting used to, but, it quickly grew on me and I don't notice the small size of the button any more. As mentioned earlier the scroll wheel has very subtle tactile feedback. The scrolling feature seems to work quite nicely. One surprising thing is that while the scroll wheel supports both horizontal and vertical scrolling it does not appear to support diagonal scrolling. I'm guessing that this is an intentional design decision rather than a technical limitation because having to concentrate on a perfectly vertical or horizontal scrolling motion could be quite frustrating. One other thing to note about the scroll button is that the small buzzer (or clicker) on the Mighty Mouse's main PCB is used when scrolling to give a very faint audible feedback. Given how quite this feedback is I think most users will not even able to hear it in a normal user environment.
The button part of the scroll buttons works very well. I have mine configured to bring dashboard up. If you recall the button does not have any tactile or audible feedback. However, the way the scroll button appears to register clicks is by a combination of pressing the scroll button and pressing the main shell of the mouse causing the main click switch to be activated providing some tactile feedback and an audible click. It doesn't seem to matter at all if your fingers are on the capacitive part of the main shell of the mouse when pressing the scroll button.
Finger hold buttons, or side click as Apple calls them, require a bit more force than feels comfortable to me. This is understandable given the dual use of these buttons as the only lifting point for the mouse and buttons, but, it still feels too stiff to me. Just like the scroll wheel a clicker buzzer in side of the mouse is used to give a little audible feedback when the side click is used.
Conclusion
Apple is selling a 4 button mouse, who would have guess it while Steve Job's is at the helm. Overall I'm satisfied with the mouse. It performs all of it functions well and is nicely integrated into the Mac OS X user experience with. The other great thing about the mouse is that it is one of the few 4 button mice that is just as easily used by lefties as righties. The only concern I have is with the intermittent workings of the right mouse button. I'm be keeping an eye on the forums to see if this is a common problem.
