Mighty Mouse's Boring Case

Any one remember the Apple hockey puck mouse? What torture that was to use if you had anything other than the hands of a child. The hockey puck mouse was replaced by an eclair shaped mouse who's entire surface was the mouse button. This design received a few criticisms for being difficult to use when you ran out of mousing space. It seemed many people did not pickup on the little finger holds on the side of the mouse that could be used to keep the mouse button depressed while lifting the mouse off the mousing surface. Despite the criticism Apple recycled this design for the Mighty mouse. In fact looking at the case of the mouse the only indication you get that something has changed is the small pea sized rubber button in the front center of the mouse top. To understand this mouse any better I'm going to have to pop the top of this Mighty Mouse. So long functioning Mighty Mouse.

Opening The Case

The Mighty Mouse case is a three piece design. The lower plate of the mouse is what rides on the mousing surface and holds the light pipe and lens for the optical tracking device. The other major piece of the case is the large eclair shaped top shell of the Mighty Mouse. Finally there is a plastic ring attached to the bottom of the top shell that performs only an aesthetic function. However, this band stands in the way of popping the hinge that connects the top and bottom pieces of the mouse.

The ring of plastic along the bottom of the mouse is glued onto the bottom of the mouse. This appears to be the only destructive part of disassembling the mouse. Using fingernails and a flat head screw driver I started just under the side finger holds and pried up the plastic ring. In just a few seconds it was off and I could clearly see the two pins extending from the top shell into bottom plate. Using a flat head screw driver again it was easy to push the top shell way from the base plate and get one side of the Might Mouse open. Once one side was open it was easy to free the other pin and have the mouse completely open.
