A Reader Wants Advice on Grad School
I got this letter from a reader. He read my Electroinc Design column and figures I must be wise. (I have stayed technical all mt career, not very wise if you ask me) Still it would be nice to help the kid out. here is a jjjjfd of his e-mail

I have graduated (BS degree in electronics) and I intend to specialize in Analog design. I have two options:- First is MS degree in EE at Columbia University in New York and second MS degree in EE from University of Southern California (USC). After the completion of my MS degree in about two years from now I intend to work as an analog designer for a semiconductor company. I seek your guidance in making this choice between the two universities.
I hear the Columbia Integrated System lab has a good reputation among senior analog designers yet not many companies hire students from this lab. Also I don’t really have much of an idea about the quality of courses for analog design at USC.

First congratulations of being accepted to two schools. There are several things to consider.
1 Who offer the best financial package.
2 Which offers the best mixed signal program analog is going to become more and more digital. That is where the jobs will be.
3 USC is a big name of both coasts. Where do the companies go to hire?
I am asking my readers to pipe in with their opinions. Even better if you went to one of these schools. If you sent me your e-mail address I will forward it to him.

This is a tough one. I would add to the list of considerations the ease of living in each respective area. Both are highly regarded schools in the most prominent major metropolitan areas of the US. Both LA and NY are hectic and and frantic. In LA, you almost have to have a car. In NY, you really don't need one and probably shouldn't have one. Both feature a high cost of living, I am not sure which is higher. NY is tightly packed, somewhat gray, and can have nasty winter weather. LA is sprawled out and mostly sunny with nary a day where donning a parka to trek accross campus will be necessary. I vote for mostly sunny.

USC has the better reputation - as well as the better climate ;

I think the best choice is USC if you are interested in pursuing chip design.
USC administers MOSIS, the Multi Project Wafer (MPW) service that all
other universities use to make chip prototypes for their students.
You might as well go to the source...
From : ( http://www.mosis.com/support/faqs/faq_orders.html#6.0 )
USC is the University of Southern California, ISI is the Information Sciences Institute, and MOSIS is a commercial integrated circuit fabrication service. MOSIS is an organizational unit within ISI, and ISI is an organizational unit within USC.

Hi everyone. By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
