PSoC Designer 5.3 is here !

The updated version of PSoC Designer, version 5.3 is out !

New Features

PSoC Designer 5.3 contains a host of upgrades to make the software easier to learn for and easier to use. New features include:

Auto-routing: Vastly simplifies wiring the connections in the chip view, making it easier to learn for beginners and quicker to use for experts. Simply shift+click on a block port and a number of glowing, golden lines will show you all the possible destinations. A second click on one of those highlighted locations and you're done! This works on analog routes as well as digital routes, block-to-block or block-to-pin.

Upgraded device catalog: It is now far quicker and easier to find the device for your project. You can filter the device list based on chip characteristics (such as pin count, package or available peripherals) or by typing in a substring of your part number. You can also save frequently used devices as favorite and see the supported user module list for any device at a glance.

Cleaner user module customization: Designer 5.3 makes it far simpler to customize user modules, providing two ways to modify their behavior. First, user modules can be copied and renamed, allowing users to change the hardware configuration or APIs. These customer user modules become part of your UM library and may be used in any PSoC Designer project. You can also export these customer user modules to a single zip file and import them into any other version of Designer 5.3 or later.

For smaller changes, we have also made it easier to change the APIs for a user module instance in your project. Simply right-click on your user module instance and you can lock it, preventing any future “Generate Project” commands from over-writing your changes.

Other ease-of-use enhancements: Cypress applications engineers have specified 12 user interface changes to make the chip view more readable and usable, including the ability to zoom with the scrollwheel. In addition, we have streamlined the project creation GUI, minimizing excess clicks. Finally, we give you the ability archive your projects.

A few snapshots from my PC, showing some of the new features:

1. New "New Project" dialog - single dialog to create/clone a project

Image

2. New Device selection catalog - the User Module preview window gives a look at what UMs you have in the selected device, before creating the project

Image

3. Auto-Routing (Shift-click on terminal) - nice one!

There was a lot of hype about all the great changes that were coming with 5.3, but I am quite underwhelmed. I guess I had hoped that Cypress would also make some changes to the workspace management aspect. Actually it does look like they have made some changes. It now takes about 2 to 4 times longer for my multi-project workspace to load and the project that is set as active is no longer identified with a bold font. What didn't change is that every time I load the workspace, the "chip" configuration window for every single project is needlessly opened which means I go get a coffee refill while the workspace loads. Perhaps I've just gotten spoiled after doing my last couple projects in Creator. I should also not neglect the fact that over-all I think that from a free IDE perspective, Designer is pretty good.

Hi, I recently updated my PSoC Designer to 5.3.

My projects are not working right. When I try to compile, there are several errors.

For example, when I tried with "Getting Started with PSoC Designer" (http://www.cypress.com/?rID=70468) there are next errors:

Starting MAKE...
creating project.mk -- no changes
Linking..
LMM info: area 'InterruptRAM' uses 8 bytes in SRAM bank 0
LMM info: area 'data' item of 2 bytes allocated in SRAM page 0
LMM info: area 'virtual_registers' uses 2 bytes in SRAM page 0
!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_ADC_start'
!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_PGA_start'
!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_PWM_start'
make: *** [output/MyFirstProject.rom] Error -1

MyFirstProject - 4 error(s) 0 warning(s) 22:47:12

Please, let me see what is happening.

Thanks for your help

Will you kindly upload an archive of your project here to have us a look at what might have caused the error.

To do so, use the "Archive Project" feature of Designer 5.3.

Look at the naming you have given to these 3 modules -

!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_ADC_start'
!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_PGA_start'
!ERROR {linker} file 'main.o': undefined symbol '_PWM_start'

When you place your first module, like a PGA, its named PGA_1, and its
start function is PGA_1_Start( PGA_1_HIGHPOWER). The second placment
of a PGA would yield PGA_2......

If you are doing a reference in ASM of the first start API it would be typed
_PGA_1_Start( PGA_1_HIGHPOWER).

So do a clean of project, and double check your naming of API calls.

Oh, suddenly I see the mis-spelling!
it is "ADC_Start()" with a capital "S"!

I have a serious problem with Custom Modules.
Every time I play with Customization wizard ( remove and add module) my target project gets damaged!
Custom modules are removed from workspace. Projects compiles like if the modules were still there(0 errors,0 warnings)).
Only warning appears, that regeneration is out of date.
And there is no way to add c module to the workspace. Simply nothing happens.
Block areas stay empty.
During project startup You get message, that custom blocks are missing (even if You added them before close-up). If You click YES (open anyway)
disaster happens (Project totally, irrecoverably change), if You say no, smaller disaster happens (Project disappears from the list of last open ones)
I got stuck.

What to do?

Robert,
when such serious errors happen, best will be to inform Cypress by filing a technical case.
Go to Cypress.com -> Support -> Technical Support -> Create a Case and describe what is happening.

Cypress support is very slow.

Well, my experiences are: not VERY  Indeed a couple of days ago I received a response within 2 hours on a Sunday!
But now there are the season days and I'm afraid that there are noticeably fewer engineers at work until monday 7th. (I was told, Arvid is on a motor-bike trip)

Happy 2013!
