PSoC 3 First Touch + LCD

Postby Fireflix » Thu Sep 26, 2013 10:32 pm

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and i hope this is the right place to ask this question.

I recently got the PSoc3 First Touch Kit. i want to play around with it and therefore i need to use an LCD to display some values.
a friend of mine has the PSoC 3 Dev Kit which comes with a 16x2 character display. Since he doesn't need said display he gave it to me.
Now how do i connect the parts i have and what do i have to do software-wise?
I'm all new to PSoC maybe a little step-by-step explanation would be nice

i have found this Thread but it didn't really help me.

I have no problem with soldering or software but i haven't used PSoC or a LCD yet.

Thanks in advance =)

Welcome in the fascinating world of PSoCs!
I would suggest you to download the schematics from both of your boards, the FirstTouch and the -30 and compare them. Then you'll see what to do / solder.
You can find the board design files at the Cypress website from here and here.

If all fails I would suggest you to scratch some money and get a PSoC5 LP Kit (CY8CKit -050) which has some advantages over the PSoC3 boards.

The PSoC3 has all the things i need. The LCD is a "nice-to-have" but not really required. I will give it a shot nonetheless ;-)

The display takes 7 pins, 4 data, and 3 control, so easy to hook up
to a port.

Thanks, this is really helpful.

Just one more Thing:
I can use the VDDIO pins (3,3V) on the bottom of the board to power the LCD, right?

If you do not draw too much current...
Have a look into the schematics, it is an output and I already used it to power some sensors etc.

If display has a LED backlight in it answer probably no. But if its just
a few mA you should be fine.
