How is a semi rep compensated?

How is a representative of a major semiconductor manufacturer compensated? They are handling the work for support, obtaining samples, stuff like that, but when I buy, I buy from an authorized distributor, not the rep. There appears to be no way for them to know that because of their work I am now placing my order, so that some commission is calculated and paid to them. Or is there?

Depends on the manufacturer, but most report the distributor sales
to the rep and pay him a comission on those sales.
