Freeware Programmer

Questions about programming (not codeing) PSoCs and Encore II as well as freeware programming hardware and software are discussed here. This is also the place to talk about production programming. Programming means loading a HEX file in to the Flash, not, writing your program.

Freeware Programmer

Postby aji_s on Mon Dec 26, 2005 9:45 am

Hi All,
Here is a beta version 1.9 of Freeware programmer. With a rewritten core this version can program a CY8C29466 within 4 seconds when delay is set to zero. Tested only with CY8C27443 and CY8C29466 on port powered type-4.
Performance of this version strongly depends on the quality of hardware.
If not working use ver1.7.Sorry for any bugs.
Regards
Ajith

Thank you for continuing to update your programmer Ajith.

For those of you that are new to Ajith's programmer there is a lengthy thread about it that was locked only because it was getting too long.

Cheers,
Eric

Hi,

some notes about problems using free programmer and how to solve them...

I have used powerfull 5V source and "Texas Instrumens" buffer sn74hc541.
The problem - "Device not found", because of the little spikes on pulses.
What have caused these spikes I dont know, but they were too much
for the MCU to take (MCU can take max Vcc+0.3V).
Solution - lowered sn74hc541 supply to 4.5V (Cypress still got 5.25V).
Funny part - programmer works fine >without< supply to sn74hc541! :)

For the fast PC you need to LOWER I/O delay!!!
"1" must be ok for most configurations.

I have used 4.7k resistor between SDA and ground (not the C 33pF).

Programmer works fine. Thank you Aji for this nice tool!

Ajith

I am a regular user of your freeware programmer. Thank you for this tool.

Couple of wishes only you can fulfil (since you're the author) ;)

1) I'd like to have a checkbox to 'auto-reload' the selected hex file before programming. ie: when the program button is pressed, if checkbox is set, re-load the hex file and then program.

2) An observation - the hardware type selection combo does not drop down, it only scrolls in the combo box.

3) Start with 'Power' Off. Turn on when program is demanded, turn off again when done.

Having these will make the programmer more user friendly.

Thanks!

There should be no problem with the hardware. But I doubt if the software will support the device.

Thank for your update,

You should think about USB now. Most of us have notebook with out LPT port.

You and all of us can work together on forum.

Ajith hasn't posted since 2006. You may need to update it yourself.

For some reason, I am able to use CYP to program a CY8C27443 without issue, but when I try to program a CY8C29466, the upload goes very slowly, then stops in the middle, verifies, and fails. Every time. Even if I read the data that was written off the chip and try to write it back, verification will still fail. I'm using the same programmer circuit for both PSoCs, but I can't seem to figure out what the issue is... Any ideas?

Here is version 1.5. Unfortunately I've not used the programmer and can not provide any support.

[I've deleted the attachment because it was an old version and Ajith's posts have now been restored]

Ajith's posts have now been restored. I don't know exactly what happened, but, it appears to have something to do with account renaming or email address changes that caused Ajith to get a new User ID here at PSoCDeveloper and his old ID being deleted. The good news is that all of his old posts were still in the data base. With a little manual data base tweaking it appears all of Ajith's posts are back. I apologize for the inconvenience everyone, especially to Ajith who has contributed so much to PSoCDeveloper with his programmer.

hi,aji_s
I do not like using the outside power supply.
I want to use "ft232rl" or "ft245rl".
Can you operate "cyp" which I supply a power supply from USB, and looks like "LPT" or "com?"
Yours sincerely,
